Owen Cathcard from Ormeau Table Tennis Club, a winner of our Little Wing’s Little Sports Stars 2014 bursary awards, recently competed at the Hungarian Mini Cadet Open. This is a European event for the top kids aged 10-13. Owen was accompanied by Thomas Joyce, his fellow Irish team mate, with the two boys both making the final 16 with many wins over the top Swedish, German and Hungarian Players!
In the Singles Event Owen showed his skills – he started his campaign seeded 4 our of 4 in his group but fought valiently to overcome opposition from Czech Republic, Sweden, and Hungary to eventually come through his group in first place. In the round of the last 32, Owen faced a talented Belarusian, but dismissed him in 3 straight sets 11-5, 11-5 and 12-10 to secure his place in the last 16. At this point, having won 12 out of 14 singles matches, he came up against a Swedish opposition that had previously triumphed vs. Owen in the team event. Always wanting to better himself, Owen flipped the cards in the last 16 of the Mini Cadet singles event to come through 3-0 against the Swede and securing a well deserved quarter final match up Vs. a very talented German. In this match Owen had chances to excel further in the event to the Semi Finals, however the German proved better on the day and prevailed 11-6, 5-11, 13-11, 11-8. A very commendable run from the younger Ulsterman, as the German eventually went on to win the entire tournament and was pushed only by Owen. Ending the tournament Owen had an 80% win average in his singles matches with 13 out of 16 victories. Owen alongside Thomas Joyce in the doubles the boys had 4 out of 5 victories.
Owen Cathcart final singles position was 5th equal (Quarter Finals)
Ireland Team final position was 9th Equal (Last 16)
Well done Owen and Ormeau Table Tennis Club (they even made it onto the news)!
